Begin with the dental school's net cost for each year, not the first tuition bill. Clinical fees, instruments, boards, licensing, relocation, and living costs can change the gap as the program progresses.

Use scholarships, institutional aid, service programs, savings, defined family help, and available federal aid before private financing. Borrow only the amount the school will certify and you actually need.

The dental-school test

Model more than one path after dental school.

A loan should remain manageable if you complete a residency, begin as an associate, relocate, or postpone ownership. Do not make the plan work only by assuming immediate high production, a signing bonus, or rapid practice ownership.

General practice

Use a conservative early associate income and include licensing, relocation, insurance, and benefit costs.

Residency or specialty

Record the required loan payment during training and how much interest may capitalize.

Practice ownership

Education debt can affect credit, cash reserves, and financing for a purchase or startup.

Public or nonprofit work

Private loans are not eligible for federal PSLF, even when the employer would otherwise qualify.

Before accepting

Put these terms side by side.

  • Personalized APR, fixed or variable rate, fees, and discount requirements
  • Required in-school payment and capitalization schedule
  • Grace period and dental-residency payment option
  • Forbearance length and temporary payment-reduction rules
  • Co-signer release, death, and disability provisions
  • Monthly payment and total repayment under the same loan term
Do not compare monthly payments alone.A longer term can lower the required payment while increasing total interest and keeping the debt in place during future practice financing.
